Adruino Lightning Detector

Has anyone ever tried building a lightning detector system that could forecast a likely strike and either enable relays to earth out etc

Currently looking into how to detect the strike either through measuring positive ions or magnetic and RF

Would love to hear if anyone has built a system or if anyone has any advice on the subject

Re: Adruino Lightning Detector

While measuring the typical precursors to lightning striking in the general area is possible and the Arduino is as good a tool as any, I don't see any added benefit. Any detection that a strike is about to hit on the boat itself would be mere milliseconds before it happened, and a general warning of possible danger is better done by looking outside for CuNim cloud and/or lightning and listening for thunder. Every AM receiver is already a pretty good analog lightning activity detector.
