AIS compatible with older 1833c Furuno

I have a complete Furuno package, Chartplotter, I think 1833c, and a 48mile Radar I bought at the same time, weather fax Fa50, Furuno Autopilot etc. It works fine and I'm familiar with it, so I want to keep using it. It has the sailfish on the blue screen when you turn it on. Are any of Furuno AIS transponders compatible with this older system? I would imagine one has to be. I asked a electronics installer who was at our marina, but of course he tried to sell me a whole new Doppler Radar system. Thanks for any info. Nelson S

that looks like a navnet so it should definatly take ais. probably via nmea 183.

no need for a furuno ais. most brands have nmea 183 outputs

gernally plotters made in the last 15 years take ais but not before that.

I think you are out of luck. The Furuno unit is close to 20 years old and I don't see any support for a high speed nmea 0183 port or any AIS support.
Probably best to get an AIS with its own displaym like one of the Vespers.
