Re: AIS different brands any good??

Matsutec and ONWA are trusted brands in Asia. Both are Korean brands and one or the other can be found on just about every Asian commercial boat (Japan excepted as they naturally use Furuno).

Vesper Marine is very good and I still have and use my Watchmate 850. I'd love a Cortex but that alas is out of my price range. Vesper used to have some of the very best support but unfortunately they were bought by Garmin and now the support is the usual crap Garmin stuff.

Try finding one to buy!
- I think marketing got ahead of licensing on this one; don’t think they ever received FCC approval 😢

Re: AIS different brands any good??

Had Vesper on my cruiser; with a masthead antenna it saw commercial vessels at incredible ranges, loved it.

Did a delivery with a Yachtdesign portable, and it did the job (now if only fishing boats would use AIS in the fog…)

I've used ONWA twice including an AIS and depthsounder. It's a Chinese (Hong Kong) company and the electronics are fine. Nothing fancy, but they work. Just understand the specifications and limitations. Their customer service was fantastic.
