Amec Camino 108W AIS

Looking for a new AIS, the Camino 108W and 108S variants caught my eye. Any experience with them?

The 108S has an integrated splitter, I wonder if VHF is still passed trough once the AIS is turned off? Also, how much loss should I calculate if using a splitter?

Re: Amec Camino 108W AIS

I have a Camino 101. A great unit, bought it from Milltech Marine around 3 years ago. It is interfaced to my chart plotter. I have never liked the idea of splitters, so have a dedicated ais aerial. It is made by Pacific Aerials & is mounted on on the stern arch.

Thanks! I am puzzled about adding a splitter too, but not having an arch I am unsure where could I mount the antenna. Obviously the higher the better, but the mast is reserved for the main VHF.

This is the aerial that I have installed on the stern. Shows ships out to around 14 nm.

Re: Amec Camino 108W AIS

Giving a thought to its more expensive brother, the B600W: has more transmit power (5W) and makes use of Glonass, Galileo and Beidu constellations. However, it's another 300bucks down the drain...

Thanks, might get something similar mounted on my radar pole. Guessing that 3dBi gain has something to do with the 14NM range
