Android applications for navigation: Alternatives to Navionics

Like many of us, I use Navionics Boating on my (Android) phone for certain navigation tasks, whether as an adjunct to my chartplotter, for planning routes while away from the boat, or for navigation in canoes, dinghies, and other smaller craft.


The boating app has not seen any significant functional updates or improvements for over a decade, although the underlying chart data has been updated.


Is there anything better?

I use both OPENCPN and AquaMaps on a Galaxy 10+ Note.

Likely you will find AquaMaps more than adequate for your needs. I can expand if you like.

I use the OpenCPN app on my Samsung Android phone, complete with every USA raster chart available. I find the raster charts much more user friendly, particularly on the small screen of a phone.

We use AquaMap for backup, on two Android tablets and one Android phone.

In our case, the USACE survey data (in-app purchase) are especially useful for transiting the AICWW.

Google Earth can sometimes be useful. You can get an aerial view of new harbors which helps to visualize things.
