Re: Anyone Ever Use a Halyard Antenna ?

I also used this type of setup. In addition I used the halyard to shorten or lenghten the antenna depending on the frequency I wanted to transmit on with the SSB. Worked like a charm and didn't need the antenna tuner because of it. A formula exists to determine the right length but we found that the system was very forgiving as we didn't always feel like changing the length outside.

Re: Anyone Ever Use a Halyard Antenna ?

In the real world, there's no way you can get away without an antenna tuner, and get a proper match on multiple frequencies/bands to the 50-ohm impedence the transmitter likes to see.

Yes, you can transmit into almost anything. No, you can't transmit efficiently into almost anything, and -- in addition to a poor signal output -- you risk damaging your transceiver unless you have a good match.

Re: Anyone Ever Use a Halyard Antenna ?

I will likely be using this as I have two backstays going to the quarters and a spare topping lift, all over a steel deck. Basically, I've been told it's ideal for SSB, properly tuned of course and properly set up.

We shall see if that holds true in practice.

Check out this link for a possible solution for those not wanting to cut their backstay.
