Both. The only Navionics I have on my iPhone is the South American set which covers the Carribean. I’ve had issues with the data that is displayed. Compared to the NV charts the data is just not as good. Reefs incorrectly displayed, or displayed much more accurately on NV.

I have a Raymarine C80 plotter on the big boat which has a Navionics chart chip. At one time I had bith the C80 and a Standard Horizion plotters on the big boat, SH has Cmap charts. The Cmap charts had better data.

I use the C80 for gross navigation, Island to island. It’s handy and hard wired to power and water proof and is my radar display. For detailed navigation, in and out of harbors, I use the iNavEx.

It is a raster version of the chart so, yes, it is identical to the paper chart. It is supposed to be.

When you say you can’t do anything with it I’m lost. I can plot waypoints measure distances, do all kinds of things. I have my icon that shows my heading and speed.

Do you not have that?

When Navigating iNavEx will flow from one chart to the next. When just using it as a charting tool it is best to be off line (airplane mode), then you need to manually switch between charts. That said, not all charts have the same functionality. For example with NV charts the zoom out zoom in buttons are missing. I believe this is something inherient in NV charts.

INavEx is NOT the best planning tool. For planning I’ve been using AquaMap. It is simply just better at laying out routes plus it provides access to Active Captain and also provides great support. IF all you were doing was staying in USA waters, say running the inter coastal waterway then AquaMap is all you really need.

Anyway, I lay out my gross course, (last years had 100 waypoints over 2,000 miles of distance) in AquaMap. I plot waypoints on the RM chart plotter running Navionics. When I’m closing the final few miles and into the harbor I’m using iNavEx.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

If you just stick with the default free NOAA charts on iNavX, you don't get quilting and other nice features. You have the pay for raster chart sets to get that.

I have no idea what that is, to me it looks like an over scaled Navionics chart.

I wish we could sit side by side somewhere and compare. This is really hard to do in this format.

Here is your same chart from my phone with a distance laid on. Can’t you do that?

Thanks, I think you’ve just solved the issue. But I can’t find the location on the INavx app where I can purchase the Raster charts.

I think I’ll just stick with the Time Zero Raster charts already purchased and then download the free set of complete east coast NOAA charts for backup. Already spent too much on the Navionics Platinum+ set for Canada. No more chart purchases this summer.

NOT true for me. I’ve all the functionality including quilting.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Select Charts (upper left) and then Store, which should give you a list of available chart sets. This purchases them through iTunes; you can also log in to the iNavX website and purchase through the Fugawi store. As noted earlier, be aware that iTunes will auto-renew and charge. The Fugawi / Garmin / X-Traverse purchases (I wish they would make up their minds what to call themselves) don't do that - I think.

And this is about the limit of my expertise, because all I have actually purchased are Navionics charts, which are adequate for my purposes.

I’ll try downloading the entire free NOAA east coast set later today.

The NOAA raster charts are FREE and have all the features.

Just download the entire suite for the area you are cruising.

CANADIAN CHS charts are NOT FREE. Downright pricey.

Download here, these are big sets and take time.

Yes, I may have mis-spoke. It's somehow less automatic but it may be scrolling or zooming or something. In simpler terms, I find with the NOAA default set I sometimes have a lot of trouble getting the view I want when on the edge between two charts.

Yes, a bit of a learning curve there.

INavEx is not perfect, there are quirks. But given what they are attempting to do with the app it’s quite amazing. They are attempting to build an app that supports a WIDE variety of formats so that you can pick and choose which data set/chart supplier you want.

It has ONE HUGE advantage, it lets you use data sets charts from multiple vendors. If you are cruising a limited area then it may not be your best choice. You may have a hardware/software/chart set combination that works well for you.

Because I’ve been moving through various geographic areas and have at least 4 different chart suppliers iNAVEx is perfect for me.
