Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Is anyone using the app, iNavX for iPad as a backup for navigation? If so, have you found a tutorial on how to learn it?

Yes I use it. And no on the tutorial.

Candidly I found it fairly intuitive —- aside from working out how to connect it to my Vesper. But there is an online help doc that is good.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Pretty much what Snore said, with elaboration.

At the start there were a bunch of simple things that confused me. There is a sort of manual on the iNavX website that explains them - I didn't find it very easy to use but it did get me over the hump.

And now that I have those basics out of the way I find it quite intuitive, certainly better than my old chartplotter.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Thank you, both.

Are the first steps those of creating waypoints, for a desired routing? And, once waypoints are created, then linking those together to create a route?

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Yes, that was one of them. Just creating waypoints confused me at first; there are a couple of options in the setup - it can be a long tap or a double tap, or something like that.

And then, once you have a waypoint, everything opens up when you select it, including the option of "add to route".

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

I'm looking at the iNavX "faqs" on their website. It says:

"Is there a charge for the marine charts and maps from X-Traverse?
Yes. iNavX provides access to the largest chart and map library. All additional charts are available for purchase either through in-app purchase or at Fugawi. Note: In addition to being able to use these charts and maps with iNavX, most may also be used with Fugawi, MacENC or GPSNavX charting software."

Are you using the "free" NOAA charts with it or did you choose to purchase other charts to use with the program?

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Yes, we used INavx for primary navigation for eight years. Now using Navionics platinum+ on a plotter along with Nobeltec Time zero and INavx on the IPads.

I just noticed that all my US navigation charts have disappeared from my INavx app which would’ve been very annoying if it happened in two weeks. Not cool. I’ve downloaded my paid for Raster charts for Nobeltec Time Zero and will be using them instead. My paid for INavx European charts are still on the IPad.

This is very concerning... the charts were there two days ago. I can no longer recommend this INavx app with this sort of BS happening.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

And, since I'm sitting in front of the iPad with time to kill, a couple of hints based in trying stuff, not memory.

I have "long tap new waypoint" set in the setup but just realized I don't really use it. Instead I do a quick tap, which brings up some info, then
- tap the waypoint symbol in the upper right of the info popup
- this creates a waypoint
- tap the waypoint and then tap its name
- then you get the other options

That's how I do it - there are no doubt other equally valid approaches.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

I have purchased the Navionics charts for the area that interests me.

Note that the purchase model seems complicated - I started with a subscription through the Apple store and then got a nasty surprise after I purchased an update through something else and then Apple automatically renewed - so paid twice for the same thing.

I'm now just avoiding anything that includes automatic renewal.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Disappearing INavx charts is not acceptable, so we’ll be using Nobeltec Time Zero along with Navionics going forward. Nobeltec has been rock solid reliable over the past four years. Bye bye INavx.

It was a good run while it lasted.

Below is the Nobletec app.

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

A iNavEx tech guy has recently joined CF. Hopefully he will see this thread and jump in. There is a Loooong thread where the disappearing issue was discussed at length and explained along with the fix.

Here is the thread, the useful stuff is quite deep near the end. Look for posts by Shaunavex.

I use iNavEx a lot and am very satisfied. I use nothing but faster charts which is my preference. I use CHX in Canada, USGS in USA, Explorer in Bahamas, MV in Carribean. All are good quality and work well.

If all else fails I would give Shaunavx a PM.

That truly is unacceptable. Isn't iNavX the same company as Navionics? And, if so, are the charts different from one over the other?

So, Kenomac, will you be using iNavX with the Nobeltec Time Zero charts or are the latter used with another app or software program?

I checked and see that Time Zero is not advertising that it's Nobeltec. Is the TZ, on the web, the software that you're using even though it may not be part of Nobeltec any longer?

So, you must be using Time Zero (on the mobile device) and Navionics on your hard-wired nav chart plotter. Am I correct about that?

Re: Anyone using iNavX for iPad?

Why anyone would use Navonix charts is a mystery to me.

The advantage of using iNavEx is that you are not locked to one chart format or producer allowing you to use the best DATA SET available for a given area.

I have Navionics data on my chart plotter and has aquifer for my laptop and iNavEx app. IMHO there are much better chart DATA suppliers.

I guess I strongly disagree with the selection process many folks use for charting. I want:
Best data sets available
Conformity to established cartography display standards
NO DECLUTTERING

Once you find the data source THEN pick a display platform.

That’s not how I got to iNavEx but in hindsight, after trial and error, it is what I should have done.

Remember that race boat that rode up on a charted reef?
In Bahamasa passes through reefs that are not there.
Florida inlets where the channel changes, except on the chart.
Etc.

Now if you only sail in a limited well traveled area, a benign area like the Chesapeake or LIS, Navionics will probably do fine, may even have some advantages. Otherwise, no.
