Arduino Auto Pilot - Anyone Tried This?

I'm looking at designing a simple arduino based steering controller using an existing 12v dc motor connected to my steering. Initially a simple 'set and stay on course' using an arduino uno, 3 axis compass, Hbridge relay, input button, and its going to require a bit of creative software to manage an older, somewhat meandering hydraulic steering system. If I can get any decent results, I'll consider some better input controls and some kind of display/monitor. Curious to know if anyone has constructed anything like this? and with what kind of results?
