Auto tuned

I inherited an icom 802 with a At 140 tuner . I was going remove it but have change my mind . The was checked out a little by a radio geek and he determined that it as functional. Here is my Question , when changing frequencies there is no sounds out of the at 140. The grounding is in very poor condition which I know affects the transmission and reception. Would that stop the tuner from trying to tune ?

Or push the tune button, out of habit I push the tune button as then it’s tuned before I begin to speak
