autohelm linear driver clutch -- raymarine

The clutch on my Raymarine type 2 linear driver is not holding. When I put 12 volts of power to it, I can hear it engage, but the wheel still turns. how does the clutch function? Is there a friction plate that might be worn or need to be cleaned?
Thanks.

Re: autohelm linear driver clutch -- raymarine

Hi,

I have a Raymarine p70s controller working with a Raymarine E12207 type2 12v hydraulic linear drive. Which is unfortunately not working and I am trying to figure it out. The controller seems to be working fine however once it is activated you can hear the hydraulic pump or drive unit start to work and it will not turn off until the standby button is pressed. When looking at the steering quadrant the ram is not moving back and forth. Not sure if there is air in the lines or the clutch is dirty? Any thoughts?

This exploded view may be helpful if you do end up taking it apart
I've not had to take ours apart yet.
We had a similar problems but it was a loose connection at the course computer so insufficient current.
If you haven't already, try applying 12V to the clutch directly from another source and see if it works.
That will help confirm the problem is the clutch and not the wiring.
