Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

W32Pamela:

I find that my M2 can only work in "Station" mode in the "wireless" tab. It appears that it can only receive, never transmit. I'm assuming that I should see transmission radio bar lights on the back of the M2 even if no wireless laptops are hooked to the unit, but i do not. So it looks like the only solution is to keep it in "station" mode and hook up the airgateway wireless router to it. I hope they will communicate with each other. Looks like 4-5 hours of programming and testing to make that happen. So far it looks like the Ubiquiti products may not be the wireless solution for my situation.

They are all transceivers; the gear is just fine, you just lack the ability to make it work. I suggest you ask or hire help.

Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

Pumpcity, it ain't rocket science but Ubiquiti equipment isn't geared for the non-technically savvy folk. It is carrier class equipment and does require a touch of knowledge to operate effectively. That said, if the radio is out of the box, the first thing I always do is upgrade the firmware. I install 10-20 M5 & M2 NanoBeam & Nanostation every month in support of hospitality wifi in my area. Ubiquiti gear is great bang for the buck, ya just gotta know how it works. Good luck.

Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

Pumpcity,

Station Mode is the mode required for the Nano to be a client. This is the mode that cruisers use to connect to shoreside AP's. As S/V Jedi has pointed out the radio is a transceiver and is broadcasting and receiving.

In Station mode the signal strength lights on the Nano will indicate the strength of the signal from the AP it is connected to. If it is not connected to an AP you will only see 2 green LEDs. The first is power and the second is the LAN.

The airgateway is set as an AP out of the box and basic instructions are included in the box. Plug the nano into the port labeled POE on the airgateway and plug your computer into the LAN port on the airgateway for the initial setup of the airgateway. If I remember correctly the setup wizard will make you set a wifi password and login password on the airgateway. None of this should take you 4-5 hours programming.

There are numerous online tutorials & videos on setting up and Bullet or Nano. The procedure is essentially the same.

Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

Bob, thank you for the response. I am also receiving more information from Ubiquiti regarding the installation. I am beginning to understand the mechanism by which these things operate, and I very much appreciate your time spent explaining the method of radio communication for the Nano. As with everything else, all settings must be the same for the radios to communicate.

Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

I think Yacht connect is the same as the Glomex Webboat so if anyone can share their experience with that product it would be appreciated

Those aren't wifi systems; they are just 4G units like a mifi or Jetpack with a better antenna.

Respectfully, I think you are mistaken. That is not how they are advertised

I have no experience with this product but have been evaluating this decision for longer than I care to admit. You may want to compare this to the Wirie Pro. I have no connection or experience there either but it's about half the price and similar features from what I have been able to determine. Let us know what you decide.

Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

Yes I have looked at the Wirie Pro as well . It seems to do everything very well and I will probably go with it as opposed to yacht connect. The yacht connect website only has an email listed for customer support and technical support contact. I emailed them approximately one week ago and still no response. I called Wirie Pro (Island consulting) and Mark the owner, answered right away and spent an extraordinary amount of time with me on the phone explaining his technology and also other options I may have. Seems like the customer service is excellent which suggests that support after the sale will also be excellent.

They are advertised as 4G systems... pretty clear that they are, in fact, 4G systems?!

No they are 4G systems that search out Wifi hotspots when they can. Look at the specs.

Re: Best marine WiFi antenna?

I know its an old tread but was just wondering what range you achieved with the Alfa combination please?
Im about to buy the same system with a 2w receiver and 10dbi external antenna.
The boat is 400m from the marina wifi on a mooring.
Any comment will be much appreciated thanks.
