binnacle wiring

All:
I have a Yacht Specialties binnacle (I know! They went out of business in 1989!) and the wire for the compass just comes up through the middle of all the moving parts for the steering without, apparently, any provisions for it to be housed along the side. Is that normal or was something removed?
Thanks!
Gearing up for Cuba!
