Can I update the maps for a 2005 RayMarine chart plotter?

I recently came into possession of a 2005 29 ft Back Cove that has the original navigation system. The boat was kept on the west coast until recently when we had it brought to the Chesapeake where it's kept at a marina on the South River. The maps in the system only cover the bodies of water in the N.W. and I am finding it a challenge to update the system with nautical maps for the Chesapeake region by replacing it with a new SD card. A couple of local marine electronics companies have told me it is difficult to do that and it likely require me to have a new chart plotter/GPS system installed.

I am willing do that but would like some advice before making what will be a rather significant investment.
