Chartplotter installation

I am considering getting a new chartplotter, probably Garmin gpsmap 547xs. I'd like to mount it over the companionway under the dodger. Do I need to put it in an enclosure, like a scanstrut or a navpod, or would it be OK to mount it without any additional protection? The unit is rated IPX7.

You should be just fine under the dodger. You could get one of those fabric covers to put on it as an extra layer of protection for when it is not in use.

Re: Chartplotter installation

I have this unit. I have it on a RAM mount at the pedestal and have had it there for a couple years. The RAM mount allows me to remove the chart plotter and stow it below when not in actual use.
