Coastal Starlink on RV plan Australia, odd behaviour

I have just purchased Starlink and it works great in port. But I tried to use it on a reef 45 miles offshore. It said it was working, good uptime, but no internet was possible.

My understanding is that Starlink RV works fine coastal. And if you try to use it blue water they send you a message to upgrade. But I am wondering if this has changed, whether my problem was the RV plan, or something completely different.

This is being sent via Starlink very near the coast -- works now.

What experience do people have?

Check the coverage map https://www.starlink.com/map - if you were in a black area at the reef then you were out of location. Simply opt-in to Mobile Priority Data (in the app via Account->Data Usage) and you will have service on black areas. By default your service plan works in all blue hexagons. And sometimes blue hexagons are way out to sea, such as at the Rowley Shoals 200 miles off the coast of Western Australia.

So if you are on the basic Starlink Roam Option (Au$174/Month) you are good anywhere that shows the Blue Hexagons in Australia and is basically close to shore? (in most cases), but if you want to go ocean sailing you need to upgrade to the mobility plan at Au$399/Month?

What Happens when you hit land again in another country can you downgrade to the roam option?

No, you don’t have to change plans to get ocean coverage - you just need to opt-in to Mobile Priority Data at AUD3.19 per GB. But this is if you stay in the same continental area - Australia includes PNG, NZ and some of the South Pacific countries.

If you want to go into SE Asia you will need to change your address to one in those countries, say Thailand or India or China or Philippines, etc. Then you can stay on the regional plan.

If you can’t get an address like that then you can upgrade your regional plan to Mobile Global at AUD300 per month. That will still need to opt-in for priority data for ocean use, but can be anywhere in the world.

Many Thanks for the Info

You should have a icon for a person in the upper right corner in the app. Click on it and then on Data Usage.

My RV/Roam service worked pretty much perfect anywhere I went last Nov-May. But at the end of that time is when they changed the plans etc.

If I were you I would check the availability map and see it it says you were in a service available hex. Maybe you just needed turn on the priority service because you were in a black hex.
