Compass and nav equipment location

I just purchased a new Raymarine chart plotter and a Vesper marine AIS transceiver, both manufacturers advise not to place the equipment within three feet of a compass, but my compass is built in at my helm with a nice red light, for night viewing.

It's not practical for me to place my new equipment displays more than three feet away from the helm.

From what I've observed, this advice is routinely ignored, but I like to install equipment in compliance with the manufacturers instructions.

Please share your thoughts on this issue.

Thanks!

Fred

Re: Compass and nav equipment location

Put your new gear close the compass and see if it changes.

Go form there.

Re: Compass and nav equipment location

my theory is if you are using your compass, it's because everything else has failed and is not longer turned on anyways...

buy a decent handheld hiking compass to store somewhere as a backup if you are worried.
