Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver

I am looking at changing my old navigation system to a Raspberry Pi with openCPN. I would like to include AIS and I am aware that the dAISy hat fits on the Raspberry Pi and does the job. Is anyone using an alternative to the dAISy hat? In this video - - Nick mentions using a RTL-SDR Blog V3 which he says can also be connected to a laptop. Is there anyone who is using one of these on a laptop? I have looked at the RTL-SDR website and it looks like it may need some coding.

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver

The dAISy hat have for me proved to be very stable and with good reception. Since it have dual reception, the sensitivity is excellent. A high quality antenna located as high as possible is recommended, and so is also the quality of coax cable connecting the antenna to the dAISy hat. If your coax cable length is more than 2 meters, please use RG213 or RG214 coax cable, do NOT use RG58 cable, if not your AIS reception quality will decrease and affect reception of AIS signals.
TheComrod AV15 have proven to be an excellent antenna for AIS reception.

Mostly, other people might have other options, but the above is a proven concept and will guarantee you excelent AIS reception quality at low cost.

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver

Thank you for the reply petter5. The advantage with designing a new system is that one essentially has a blank piece of paper. The Raspberry Pi4 with the dAISy hat looks like a good starting point.

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver

I bought a dAISy HAT to try and debug a problem someone was having with using kplex to send data to marinetraffic. For the price, I'm super-impressed by just how well thought out it is. Design, documentation, break-outs and debugging interface are all great. It's been sitting in a corner attached to a pi 2 for the past 5 months now. Occasionally my partner asks if we can get get rid of the less-than-attractive home made dipole hanging in the apartment window and given the nonsensicality of paying for electricity without having shares in marinetraffic I keep planning on taking it apart "tomorrow".

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver

For our Seatalk, Nmea0183 (old instruments) and Nmea2000 system, I am going to try to pair an Ocenav ATM105 C3 Wifi Smart Gateway with a WegMatt dAISy 2+ dual channel AIS Reciever with Nmea0183 output then I'll be able to have instrument and AIS data via wifi for our cell phone and tablets running OpenCPN too. This setup seems to solve all our needs without needing an RPI.

Re: dAISy Open Source AIS Receiver

Can anyone share their experiences with this splitter. I understand it works well from someone who would probably know.
