Dimmable Tablet

Any experience / suggestions for a dimmable tablet - true zero to 2000 nits?
Would not need to be weatherproof.
Used at the inside helm as backup for chartplotter.
Present monitor has developed a problem in the dimming control that it seems cannot be fixed. Have to be able to dim at night.

Re: Dimmable Tablet

2000 nits is super bright. iPads are 500 nits so this won’t be an easy search. Good luck.

Re: Dimmable Tablet

2000 nits is bright even for a high quality laptop!

EDIT - in fact you won't find one! Studio monitors or a very pricey video monitor (used by video recording professionals).

Re: Dimmable Tablet

My Galaxy was dim-able IIRC....?

Adjust screen brightness from the settings menu
From the Home screen, touch Apps .
Touch Settings .
Touch Display.
Touch and drag the Brightness slider to the right for a brighter screen or to the left for a darker screen.

Re: Dimmable Tablet

We have a galaxy tab A 10.5 (3 years old ish now)
There are 2 modes we use at night.
Dark mode: turns the white menus black.
Darker: reduces the brightness much further than the normal minimum.
With these both on it works well and doesn't mess up our night vision. It's not true zero but if you forget to turn it off its pretty hard to see the screen at all in daylight (down below).
Our previous nexus had something similar with a different name.
We find the screen usable outside in Caribbean sun (much better than my phone).
You do have to rotate it to the right orientation if using polerised sunglasses though.
Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Dimmable Tablet

Thank you all for your help.
Much appreciated.
All of this is in aid of solving my problem with the control for my Argonaut monitors.
It seems they are too old for new parts. Monitors are fine, they dim and go bright ok but I have only one working control board (switch back and forth, run only one monitor at night - all that).
These boards have all kinds of "views". I just need on / off and dim up and down.
I am trying to sort through the tablet thing preparing for when the last control board dies and the monitors will only run full bright (or wherever I set them last).
Thanks again

Re: Dimmable Tablet

You cannot get true night adapted to full daylight readable displays without two backlight systems. The operational range is too great.

The military has them, and they are expensive, but they are well suited to that range of use. MIL-STD-3009 covers daylight readable, MIL-L-85762A goes all the way down to night-vision goggle compatibility, although you don’t need to go that low for night vision without NVIS.
