We did this with our Watchmate while outside the US. Easy, quick, straightforward. Much more pleasant experience than our Icom radio.
Thanks for the CFR reference. It sounds like the CRF and Vesper policy permit any installer to perform the change. So perhaps I can just have a friendly local boatyard/installer tech submit the query to Vesper support - and stay compliant.

When you changed the MMSI on your watchmate, did they send you something like a custom firmware updater program that made the change for you, or was there some way to do it via the vmAIS app?

Per CFR, "entry of static data into a Class B AIS device shall be performed by the vendor of the device or by an appropriately qualified person in the business of installing marine communications equipment on board vessels. In no event shall the entry of static data into a Class B AIS device be performed by the user of the device or the licensee of a ship station using the device"

Per Vesper, "it can also be done right on the boat by any marine electronics installer"

Re: DIY MMSI (re)programming

Initially posted this in a Sanav AIS-700 thread, but after reading the starting post of this thread ... maybe it is better placed here?

The following will allow you to change the MMSI number for the
older Sanav AIS-700 (from San Jose Technologies - in Australia sold by OceanTalk). SJT and OceanTalk are long out of business so best that this knowledge is not lost to time...

Sanav AIS-700 MMSI Reset

You will need to make a simple jumper cable which connects between your usual serial plug (via USB-Serial converter is fine) and the AIS unit. This is simply a 9-pin serial jumper cable thus:

PC (9-pin Female) to AIS-700 (9-pin Male)

pin 2 to pin 6
pin 3 to pin 7
pin 5 to pin 5

Now:

Plug jumper cable between normal serial plug and device
Start AIS-700 software
Turn ON AIS unit
Connect at 38400
All ship's data ("User Settings") should be clear
Enter MMSI, Name, callsign, type, dimensions etc
Remove jumper cable and direct connect AIS to PC as normal
Press [Set] button

Cycle Power on the AIS-700 device (leave off at least 30 seconds)
Close AIS-700 program
Restart AIS-700 program
Connect and check!

Feel free to msg me for a better cable description or wiring diagram, or for the original Sanav software. ProAIS (ver 1) usually doesn't work correctly with this AIS device.

I am asked to help friends to change the MMSI in the FURUNO AIS-500T. The manual says that only the manifacturer can do this. Does anyone here know how to do this?

Can you check the model number of the AIS unit, I cannot find any reference to a Furuno AIS unit with the model AIS-500T.
Usually Furuno AIS units are prefixed FA, for example FA-150

Re: DIY MMSI (re)programming

Sorry, can't help you. Looks like it was made by Ocean Radio, and distributed by Furuno in France
Might be worth asking the question on a French boating forum.

Anyone found a solution to reprogramm MMSI to a Ray55 (or similar)?

Would be very much appreciated!

John

Re: DIY MMSI (re)programming

This works for the 220 and may work for the 240 and 55.

Press down the FUNC, 16/9 and DSC keys while you power the radio on.
Keep holding down the keys until you hear a beep. The MMSI num should now be cleared.

Reprogam your MMSI number as per the manual.*

Re: DIY MMSI (re)programming

Thanks! I read that this will not work, as there is no "FUNC" button on a Ray 55.

Worst thing would be i have to take the unit back home and send it to someone to reprogramm.

John

Re: DIY MMSI (re)programming

I'd try various other 3 key combo's. Might be a theme with the RMs???

Re: DIY MMSI (re)programming

Hello there, I was wondering if anyone might have the information on how to reset the MMSI number on an Icom IC-M504 and a Furuno FM3000 VHF radios. Both allow up to two MMSI changes but this seems to have been used up in the past. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Alex
