Re: DSC Position Request from Handheld with Boat's MMSI

Wow, I missed this thread at the time but what a load of BS from USCG and so much damage done by these videos and they don’t care at all.

I got here as I’m thinking of buying a GPS+DSC equipped handheld as well and want to find the dinghy or the mothership etc.

For those wondering how things really work or what to do in which situation: go do the course, why not? I also have my GMDSS General license and went back to school for 5 days for that. It was great fun and I guess it’s all done online now.

Re: DSC Position Request from Handheld with Boat's MMSI

Nick, et al,
Yes, this was a disturbing video, full of false info....some of it even dangerously false!
And, yes....it is still a sad state of affairs that almost no pleasure boaters understand DSC, and even most offshore sailors are ignorant of DSC (VHF and HF), and the GMDSS!

And, yes, I also do advise a course....but, unfortunately most that need that class / course are already out there cruising....and those that are still at the dock / have good internet / access to the education ---- well, many just think that since they have a smartphone and/or a sat-phone (handheld sat phone), then "all is well, 'cuz 'radio' is so out-dated"

Some good news though....
Years ago, spurred-on by this thread 6 - 7 years ago, I made a series of videos, explaining DSC for the average layperson sailor....
Taking them from the average non-tech sailor, through to being informed and proficient in HF-DSC comms....(as well as some other videos on Maritime HF comms in general, Offshore weather / WeFax, Icom M-802 Instruction Videos, and even put together a few videos from others regarding VHF-DSC)

I think many sailors / cruisers find them useful...

BTW, years ago....in addition to the "stickies" at the top of the Marine Electronics page here, I also wrote quite a bit on the GMDSS and how best we can use it...

I hope this helps some of you.

But, please be kind, regarding my videos....I made these videos by myself, with no script, no director, etc., just my radio, my fingers, and my extemporaneous narration, all done LIVE, as it happens, at the dock, on a real offshore cruising sailboat....not in a lab, no simulations, no rehearsals....just like everyone else does, in the real world....(oh, and nobody is trying to sell you anything!)
Enjoy!

Fair winds.

John

P.S. I still do promote DSC (and the GMDSS), but as you might observe from this thread here...

Does anyone actually use DSC?
https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...ml#post3371610

You might see that many do not use DSC, and don't care to...
Those that don't ---- well, they are pretty ignorant of the GMDSS, and some are unwilling to learn....
You know that old saying..."you can lead a horse to water, but ya' can't make 'em drink"
Oh well...
