Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

My boat is equipped with old Raymarine ST4000 talking Sealtalk 1 and other instruments belonging to the same era (depth sounder, wind instrument). I am trying to get an NMEA 0183 output to play with my self built onboard router (based on Raspberry Pi). As far as I can see there is no NMEA output on ST4000 or any of the other instruments.

Is there an easy way to get NMEA data out of this network without spending several hundred dollars?

you can get a seatalk to nmea 183 converter. raymarine used to make one. probbaluy find a used one cheap. otherwise the newer ones other brands might be pricy as they will have more options as well.

Thanks. Haven't seen any reasonably priced ones.

I wish someone made and sold kits of this: YAPP: Homemade Seatalk to USB interface

YAPP did make kits but appears to have disappeared.

Thanks all. Even better, does anyone have one that is not in use anymore due to upgrading to a more recent technology and would be interested in selling theirs?

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

I bought a router a while ago, havent gotten it hooked up yet. Not even sure I can find it. The purpose was to share speed depth etc and AIS info. I'll take a look later today. Ordered it from somebody in Europe...

Ok, I looked up old email. Wifi Router, with seatalk and nmea

WiFi NMEA 0183 / Seatalk Router
- Network options: NMEA 0183 / Seatalk
- No of Ethernet Ports: 1 port mk III 1 $108.81 $108.81
Sub-Total: $108.81
United States (Weight: 220.00g): $15.91
Total: $124.73

website is vyacht.net, but it does NOT appear to be working...

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

Thanks Redpcx. This may be an overkill for me. I am in fact building my own onboard Signal K router and that's the reason I am looking for Seatalk to NMEA (or better) Seatalk to USB conversion.

I already have an initial version of the Signal K router that then talks to a mobile app I am developing (planning to opensource it when ready).

I can certainly make use of the Vyacht to dissect it but I am sure you can get more value out of it from someone else

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

Tenedos,
I have a Raymarine E85001 Seatalk/NMEA Interface Box I'll sell. It was only installed for a couple of months and replaced with a Shipmodul Wi-Fi unit. Original packaging, manuals etc. PM me if interested. Andy

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

I recently had my Ray Marine / Telefex systems upgraded from the 2004 version of Sea Talk. It was very economical ($150.00) for four black boxes to be upgraded and now I'm compatible with N2000 as well.

Check with Ron List at Mastry in St. Petersburg.

I recommend getting the Shipmodul WiFi that SV Dawn mentioned. It is hands down awesome. You may only use some of its capabilities at first, but you'll have room for growth.

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

I have close to the same system and am doing the same thing. At the autopilot i have a multifunctuon blah blah from raymarine. Open the cover and you see some terminals marked seatalk, on the ends there are a set for nmea 0183 in and out. I got my gps signal here and is working fine, am having trouble getting ais to show on e120. I also have a px with rs422 connection that i bought an adapter from amazon for 10 bucks and plugged in and it has everything showing in open cpn. So.....current track, i have oredered an rs232 connection and usb adapter to plug it into laptop to act as a mutiplexer. Total cost so far excluding ais is $28. I already had some extra wire.

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

You can take the nmea out of a Ray plotter (if you have one) or else use the Ray blackbox (ray/nmea converter box).

Re: Easiest way to get NMEA 0183 from Seatalk

I tried to do this using an E85001 that I bought on ebay. It worked however, I ported the data into a Garmin chart plotter. Unfortunately, the Garmin would intermittently and spontaneously shut down. Some times this happened right away and sometimes, it would work well for 8 hours at a time. The Garmin technical support team blamed it on the Raymarine E85001 (although they could not specify what the root cause was). Since the E85001 was no longer in production and I bought it second hand, I could not get support from Raymarine. In the end, I gave up and learned to live without integrated instruments.
