Re: Economical VHF Radio

The Standard Horizon GX2200 isn't the basic unit we were thinking of, but we like what we're reading about it. If we can get a $350 boat show special I think that's the way we'll go too.

Re: Economical VHF Radio

Just double checking but the GX2200 is only an AIS reciever, not a transmitter, correct?

Re: Economical VHF Radio

I went with the GX1700 in black. AIS would be nice, but was not an absolute necessity for me. Got it new for $189 through an ebay seller, free shipping. It will do what I need it to do.

From what I read, the 2200 is a receiver only?

Re: Economical VHF Radio

Yes, AIS receiving only from what I understand, with proximity alerts too if memory serves, if a transmitting vessel is close. Definitely not a must-have feature, but nice to have. The way I see it, I would expect to pay approximately that much for a regular fixed mount anyway, so anything on top is a bonus.

Re: Economical VHF Radio

Icom IC 32 Handheld. Floats and is the best of the bunch when we using a dozen or so mixed on the Outrigger regatta's Escort boats.
Built in I have a STD Horizon QuestX GX 1500s Class D DSC Transmit rec've and interconnect with GPS. Commercial Waterproof grade.
According to the spec's.
Our prices here in Aust are a LOT more than US. so go for it. get the better ones.
You get real pissed when they don't work or get through when you want them too.

Compared to the Icom in H\H. those cheap ones really are cheap when used alongside of. have to keep them in plastic bags too. The life savers tried 'em but not any more.
Buy the Icom. You buy it once. Simple.
