Re: End of Radio Australia HF broadcasts!

"Plenty of new very high quality HF portables out there from companies like Tecsun, Kaito, and Eton/Grundig and not expensive either. You can pick up a Tecsun 310ET, introduced this year, for $55 delivered ex Ebay, .. and that is at the quality end of the market."

Do these units above pick up the frequencies on HF used by the BOM for transmitting weather forecasts?

The 310ET doesn't, its pure AM... you need to pay about $100 US/$150 Oz for something like the 680 TECSUN PL680 and then you are good to go. Anon-co are good to deal with and are on ebay...

I've just heard back from Cathy... well .. one of her minions...

'Thank you for your email to Cathy.

We have prepared a letter representing your concerns to the Minister, as soon as Cathy has signed it we will forward a copy to you.'

You need one which will pick up single sideband broadcasts.

Just drove across the continent from Queensland to the SW of Western Australia and found it is not only the HF broadcasts that are disappearing. Where once one could tune to many MF broadcasts with a car radio there are now very few, and in many places, none available. If one puts the car radio on scan in FM it will pick up a local station as you close on the population centres but drops out within a few miles of leaving them.

Re: End of Radio Australia HF broadcasts!

Spent this evening listening to the RCI offering ( in english) to the SW Pacific....

More subtle than Radio Albania in the 70's but the propaganda is there....interleaved with the regular news......

Radio Australia has long had a reputation in the region for unbiased news reporting.

I believe you mean CRI. RCI is Radio Canada International, which ceased shortwave broadcasts in 2012 - apparently no-one noticed.

I noticed. The station in Sackville NB covered most of the US with a high quality signal. It also reached into South America and well offshore of the US Atlantic seaboard.

Oooops, finger trouble.
People did notice when RCI went off air... but by then it was too late.

I will wager that a lot of Radio Australia listeners in the SW Pacific and elsewhere are blissfully unaware of current plans... its not as if every hour we are hearing 'this service shall cease at the end of the month... please retune your radio to chinese propaganda.'

I used to enjoy tuning in on the occasional mid watch, but RCI kept cutting back on transmitting hours, so it was generally easier to tune in to the BBC world service. If it helps, when RCI signed off, they also ceased re-transmission of the Chinese propaganda from Sackville.

Not sure how I would go about mounting that kit on my camel......

Sadly I think it is a 'done deal' despite lots of representations from affected parties.. https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...r-remote-areas

Methinks Michelle Guthrie is a Murdoch mole on a mission ......

You could email her direct at Guthrie.Michelle@abc.net.au

I did this morning and probably will again tomorrow and maybe even on Sunday.....

Undoubtably she is. Control of the media is much easier when you get rid of all the public broadcasters.

You have that bass-ackwards - control of the media is ensured where you only have state-run broadcasters - think Pravda.

Depends on who wants the control. I think Deepfrz was suggesting that Murdoch wants control of the media (not the State).
