Engine instrument pod

The engine instrument pod on my Catalina 34 MkII has cracks along the top and allowed water to enter. While repairing that damage I found the rest of the pod is also damaged. I can buy a new one from Catalina but they are an inch deeper and the wheel will hit it, so I would need to buy ( at considerable expense) a dished wheel to suit. I have taped it up with waterproof tape but that's a short term fix. I'm considering trying to fabricate a fibreglass replacement....any other suggestions?
