Any advice you have for me is appreciated.

Hi Nikki,

Yes you can use an epirb purchased in Europe, but have it coded with Australian ID. That's not a problem.

I'd highly recommend getting a GPS unit. They don't cost that much more and can be the difference in a quick rescue. GPS ones are often colored green.

I like Safety Alert, gps ones you can get for $280. They have a ten year battery and three day signal. Come with a mounting bracket.

If money is no object get two, or get a PLB as well. But at least have two on your boat.

Ted

Re: Epirb for Australia

Thanks Ted,

is the Safety Alert one you like the KTI (Kinetic technology international) one?
(If so, they are an Australian company anyway)

If you get 2, do you if the Unique Identifiers can both get registered to the same MMSI?

(Someone at KTI told me if I ordered online they could assign the MMSI to the epirb - I had previously thought that MMSI was only applicable to the DSC radio.....can you enlighten me, by any chance?)

Yes, Safety Alert are from KTI.

You don't specifically register an MMSI to an epirb. You register them to your boat and a person. Your right the MMSI is for DSC. If you get two or more, you just register them under the specific epirb registration on the unit.

There is a place on the registration form, where you can record an MMS I if you have one. Registration can be done on the internet.
