Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

I notice that newer fish finders and other marine sonars like side scan and forward scan sonars have incredible detail and range. I saw one ad for a down sonar that could pick out individual fish and even lures!

Has anybody ever seen something amazing down there like a submarine or a really big shark?

Re: Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

Fish always appear as fish, but taking the boat over the top of our divers would show them up looking like little tadpoles with legs which swam across the echo sounder screen.

Re: Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

I was thinking about installing my fish finder facing as forward as
possible in order to detect submerged obstacles that’d include reefs, tree logs, submarines just for
Fun, big rocks, rapidly rising bottom like a beach. Fishing nets(dream on). I need it to Alarm me as well if I have drifted off on some reverie about getting a schooner with double masted Marconi rigs that are self tending able to decide when to reef everything automatically.🤣[emoji104]

I've seen boats on sonar from a submarine, does that count?

Commercial fishing, I passed over a sub and got a sub sail & hull outline on a paper recorder.

Re: Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

I've twice had whales trigger my grounding alarm, set at 30 feet. Where I sail -- Half Moon Bay, CA -- there are times that I have to continually dodge grey whales and humpbacks.

A word of advice: if there are humpbacks around, and you see a large concentration of birds in one spot on the surface -- avoid that area! A humpback will soon breach at just that spot. I'm sure a few slow birds must get added to the humpback's diet that way.

Coming into kings bay. Saw something big on radar, didn't think anything of it. An hour later sub surfaces off in the distance. Tender and frigate were in the area so we wondered if something was up.

Re: Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

Never thought about it but I guess its possible. Modern submarines use special herbs and spices rubber coatings even on some internals to absorb active sonar which is able to dodge even USN sonar, probably the best sonar there is.

Certainly we depended on remaining undetected during the many war game training exercises with the USN, and even when they knew we were around we almost always managed to escape.

Usually the games are configured around a target vessel, most often its a capital ship such as an aircraft carrier and her many formated escort vessels.

Sub captains are the wiliest of creatures and have an instinct for fooling surface fleets in an effort to score a kill which will satisfy the games umpire. But attack plans vary, Ive been aboard when the skipper ran unde electric on the surface for a night attack with the boat flooded up to the sail (conning tower). In this way he cant be picked up by sonar or radar, and shes running too quiet and too close to shore for hydrophones to pick her up.

We past several fishing boats who were unaware of our presence and somewhat terrified by the dark shape of the sail and wash from the boat wondering what it is, or why a three story building seem to go right passed them.

I'd be surprised if one of our boats was lit up by the best efforts of Garmin or similar and bested the USN, but I guess stranger things happen. Ive been on this guys boat and he is deadly and quite fun. He used to take the crew fishing up the gulf sometimes.

Re: Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

We surfaced and lit up like a fishing boat once. Couple big spotties out on brooms from the top of the fin and assorted other lights. Worked to sneak through an outer picket !.

Entering pearl with a broom tied to Aft Periscope was also highly amusing to us, less so the Op-for that never found us all Rimpac.....

No.
But I did have a periscope pass me once, about 80 yards to port.

Hey I was on the SSN-588, USS Scamp,

PM me for when you were on it. Maybe sometime I did something crappy to you, or you did it to me.

Re: Ever seen a submarine on sonar?

No, but I did once look down from a Beaver float plane to see a family having lunch in the cockpit as they cruised up Jervis Inlet totally unaware there was a submarine at periscope depth right behind them.
