Fixed Mount VHF Upgrade

The old Standard VHF is giving up the ghost after 14 yrs of service. Have you bought a radio recently? The Standard Horizons with AIS look very attractive however I already have the Comar recieve only and antenna switcher. Any thoughts or advice?

Is that the older version of the standard horizon GX2100?

They are essentially the same radio except that the 2100 has the AIS receiver built-in, whereas the 2000 let's you use your own. I have the 2000 with an external AIS transceiver. I love it.

hth...

No GPS...

I could not find a VHF radio with integrated GPS so I'll suggest that any new VHF radio with DSC and a NMEA input and a cheap GPS to connect to it is the way to go.

I think that they should have an integrated AIS transponder as well.

And don't get me started on why we can't have a combined mast top transmitter/antenna controlled digitally from wherever we'd like...

Re: Fixed Mount VHF Upgrade

I have lost track of the model numbers and what they represent over the years, but if you get a fixed VHF station, get the model that can accomodate a separate remote microphone. Really really handy to have that 25 watt vhf capability in the cockpit as well for the price of a RAM...

Re: Fixed Mount VHF Upgrade

The latest SH model is GX-2150. The handheld standard horizon HX-851 is the only radio I know of with integral GPS....hard to believe when every smartphone has them!

You need to integrate the GX-2150 with your chartplotter via NMEA0183.

I have both these radios and they are a very useful pair together for testing DSC capabilities.
