FLIR Scout Thermal Monocular

I'm interested in buying an affordable thermal imaging monocular like the FLIR Scout. I'd like to have one for seeing in the dark, both while under sail and in a dark anchorage. My concern is a handheld unit will not have a useful range (perhaps <100 m).

I'd also like to use it for troubleshooting electrical and engine problems. For example, if I point it at an electrical panel, will it show a build-up of heat in one of the breakers?

Any advice from people that own or have used a thermal imaging monocular would be greatly appreciated!
