This I will be talking about in the context of architecture and attempts to future proof so we don't have to rip everything out and start again. Conversions up and down the OSI layer model (I won't torture people with that) for physical and protocol conversion is really important.

Re: Free webinar about electronics and communications for cruisers

UPDATE: The original planned time was 2p-4p US ET. Everything got set up for 4p-6p US ET. Josh McLean has 'fessed up to the error. The backstory is that we have a virtual happy hour on Fridays from 4-6p US ET and he had that in his head.

We're going to stick with:

Wednesday 13 May 4p - 6p US ET. 1600 - 1800 US ET. For our international friends we are UTC-4 during daylight savings time, so 2000Z - 2200Z.

There will be a recording available on YouTube also free. I'll post the link here when it is available.

Registration for the free webinar is here https://www.davidwaltersyachts.com/sailing-events . You can also sign up for the virtual happy hour on Fridays, also free. BYOB. *grin* Some fun people and I'm working on getting a friend of mine to make an appearance - you'll know who it is if he shows up. You probably have one or more of his books with greasy thumb prints on the pages.

P.S. Josh tells me we are approaching the limit for participants on his Zoom account. He has agreed to cover any overages so no one interested has to miss out.

I'm going to check my slides for typos. Again. *grin*

What do you plan to run on the PI3? OpenCPN? Do you have existing instruments or are you shopping?
Yes, definitely OpenCPN, been using it for 10y and gone around once with it.
I do have instruments and "some" knowledge...
I have old Raymarine ST60 instruments, an iKommunicate signalK gateway, Camino 108 AIS and Simrad 4G Radar, laptop, android phone and android tablet. I want everything to talk to each other seamlessly.
Downloaded OpenPlotter as well.

However, I too don't want to hijack this thread, I know that there are at least 2 already on CF about this subject.

Hello Stefano. No worries. I enjoy working with people who know their limitations. I have a list of mine. *grin* From your list, if you have everything to talking to the iKommunicate you're going to be in pretty good shape. The only thing hard to distribute is radar. That continues to frustrate me. The OpenCPN team is working on that. The interfaces are...awkward.

The OpenPlotter stuff is helpful. I take exception to two bits of their package. The inexpensive SDR dongles do work but they aren't very good radios. I prefer a dedicated AIS radio such as the dAISy2 and a solid shortwave radio such as the Tecsun PL-880 for weather fax. I'm not a particular fan of gribs. I have pictures in my presentation. I'll take gribs if I have no choice but synoptic charts are so much better that I've added a radio and cable and software to my delivery go-kit. OpenCPN lets you do overlays which are brilliant. Plug-in required.

After you've had a chance to watch the presentation send me an email and we'll build from there.

Great. I'm happy to help. One of the themes is future-proofing your electronics so you don't face ripping out working equipment as technology advances.
