Garmin 740s with with 18hd Radar Bundle

Think I'm gonna go pick one of these packages up today. Looks like a lotbof bang for the buck. Wish it were a tad bigger , but mounted right in front of me on the binnacle , should be fine. Anybody have any input onnthis combo system ?

Re: Garmin 740s with with 18hd radar bundle

I had the 740s on my prior boat. I loved it. I find Garmin much more intuitive to set up and use than the Raymarine on the current boat. We installed a depth transponder that shot through the hull. Lot of easy to read information on a small, high resolution footprint. When we went to Maine last summer, we used the side-by-side radar and chartplotter for the overnight up and the lovely Maine fog. Very good resolution despite the screen size. You should have no problem reading it at the binnacle. The one feature that the system doesn't have (unless they've upgraded) is a chartplotter/radar overlay. We did fine without, but I do like the overlay to distinguish ATN from boats easily on the screen.

Yikes , just got to the boat and opened the box , looks like I gotta drill an 1 1/4 hole in the mast to pass the cables thru. This can't be good for the mast :/. Old radar cable goes thru a 5/8 hole. Really don't wanna cut the connector off the cable. Aluminum mast . Not sure if I should drill thru the front or the side of the mast for this?

Do not be affraid to cut the connector off. The cable is an ethernet crossover cable and Garmin supplies a field replacement connector with the kit. Any good computer tech could put the end back on for you if you are not comfortable doing this yourself. Just pay atention to the order of the wires in the end that was removed.

The new models do have the radar overlay.

Boo for packaging details.......no nasser plate or any other means of mounting the radar dome.......guess I'll make it 4 trips to west marine this weekend . Called the store in olympia to make sure they had a standard horizon gx 2150 . 45 minute drive , and the girl that took my call says the computer shows we have one...........
