Garmin 78sc connection to OpenCPN

I can't get my Garmin 78sc to connect to my copy of OpenCPN. My OS is Windows 7 (64). I have Com3, 4, 5, 6 & Garmin-USB data ports.
My dedicated nav computer is a Windows Vista using a Garmin 72h connected by a 9 pin to USB and it works great but when I try to connect this set up to my Windows 7 computer it does not work.
I am trying to get the Windows 7 to work as a backup using either the Garmin map 78sc or the 72h. Any help much appreciated.

When you say "9 pin to USB" you mean you have a serial to USB adaptor, correct?

If so, it's probably that you need a driver for the adaptor for Windows. If you got a small CD with your serial-USB adaptor, it's there. Otherwise, it's probably online somewhere.

From Ray's comment it looks like the driver solved his problem.

But I thought I would mention for others that not all USB adapters will work. Whether it's a Garmin issue or something else, I had a similar problem, and reinstalling the driver did not help. I bought a different adapter and it worked fine.

My setup was Garmin GPS76MAP feeding into Garmin Bluechart.
