I have found the commercial adaptors slightly unreliable. Six months seems about their average life in my hands. I don't think the manufactures design them for use every day in hot conditions. The slightly lower and variable boat battery voltage (verses the constant 13.8v when used in a car) is also probably a factor.
Open some of the Chinese ones are you'll be shocked , literally as well as professionally , bloddy deaths traps in waiting.

Possibly not as bad as some of the Chinese plug in 12V to 120V inverters... I had one I caught just in the nick of time. Stepped onto the boat and noticed burning electrical smell and found a fully melting plug-in 150W inverter charging a laptop.. It was probably 10-15 minutes from fire....

That one was from Wal*Mart, or somewhere similar, and was red & black. Don't recal exact brand but was an elcheapo inverter that was really too big to be sticking into a 12V outlet...

Here is another one that was made by Radio Shack. 150W or 12A +/- is an awful lot to be pulling through a plastic 12V outlet continuously.......

This one was charging a computer as well when it melted...
