Re: HF Radio Questions -- Atlantic Crossing

Hi there,
as said before, power connections is key. Check thoroughly.

If there is any flaw with the antenna set up including corroded tuner relays the IC M801E will cut tx power for self protection.
So check SWR and tuner ground wiring.
The IC 801 E together with the AH4 tuner is a great set up. Youll get it working.
By the way listen into 14313 kHz it's the European Atlantic HAM marine band.

Re: HF Radio Questions -- Atlantic Crossing

We had the same issue on our 802. Eventually had the mike tested. Failed. Bought a new one on line. Worked straight away.

It's a professionally installed Icom M801E, so quite similar to my own M802.

It receives fine and the tuner apparently works. The antenna is an insulated backstay, and the ground plane is two dynaplates. No corners were cut in the installation, which I guess was done as part of the original build in 2010.

But I can't seem to transmit. I get a slight flicker only on the power meter when transmitting, and I have not been able to make any conta

What could the problem be? Power is set to high; and I've tried other power settings as well.

Grateful for any tips.
Are you close enough that you had tried your mike on his radio? All of the experts have expressed knowledge. A bad mike or a bad connection sounds like the most probable. Let us know.

If you are using a Tuner like AT 140, be sure the Green Ground Wire coming from the radio, is NOT connected to the tuner.

No. As it happens, the ARC was in town and all pros booked solid. Our hands were full with other isses. I did get the KVH working, and one of the crew bought and activated an Iridium Go. So we have working comms plus backup. We should make the Cape Verde Islands in about 5 days and will come back to this then if we have time. Thanks to all for the very helpful input.
