High Frequency Radio Problem

We have a "Sea 222 Aus" H.F Radio. that came with the boat.It is connected up to a Pactor -lle. Problem is i can only recieve local weather and nothing else .But Airmail is working fine i can recieve and send emails and bring in weather forecasts etc. This leads me to think that the radio is o.k. but that i'm doing something wrong.I have checked all the wiring and the earth and all seems to be o.k.

Has anyone had this problem?.Any advice would be great.

Tom,

This sounds like the kind of problem that is best solved by inviting someone who is well-experienced in operating marine radios down to your boat and turning them loose. I suspect that you are just pushing the wrong buttons or something like that, especially if you can make good Airmail connections.

There are just so many possibilities that this will be very frustrating to try to solve over the internet. Get some local help and take notes!

Good luck,

Maybe you are right. One of the problems is that the set is quite old and everybody who has tried to help all have these new Icom Radios with lotsa buttons and pre programed channels .I just tried getting someone to call me and that seems to work o.k too but i"m not able to voice transmit....very strange

"New" radio?

The newer HF radios look very nice.

Have you considered contacting one of our members, btrayfors. He has considerable expertise with marine radios, and which ones are most suitable for various purposes.

It might be cheaper to buy newer rather than trying to resurrect an old one.

This is a wild shot in the dark but we have an SEA 235 and we had problems initially. On our radio, there is a setting that must be changed every time you go from voice transmissions to data transmission. When transmitting data, we change the SSB AF to DB9. When transmitting voice, we change the SSB AF to MIC.

Hope this helps.
