To folks saying "we already have good enough comm solutions for at sea, what do we need instagram for, blah blah blah...."

This new system being described here sounds like it has an awful lot more redundancy built into it than existing solutions, by virtue of the fact that it's got a whole constellation of satellites. On top of this, making the whole thing cheaper means you can afford redundancy on your end, as well, with multiple gizmos to talk to the satellites.

I'm a big fan of redundancy.

Re: High Seas cellphone internet (Elon Musk)

On the plus side, Iridium went bankrupt and the assets resold for what, a nickel on the dollar? And Elon does have some familiarity with bankruptcy, so there's a chance his satellites could be launched yet.

Gotta wonder if putting a Tesla in an Earth/Mars orbit voids the warranty....

And he conveniently forgets that "hyperloop" is just a rehash of the proposed trans-Atlantic train tunnels that have been written about since Victorian times. Nothing new in that concept either. There was a pneumatic subway "demo" built near Wall Street over a hundred years ago, the remains are still buried down there.

SpaceX is showing potential, but Tesla's assets may wind up being another Iridium at the rate he keeps burning through new money.

Predicting the impact of Mush on sailors and sailing? Kinda like trying to paint a rogue cannon, isn't it?
