How long has your iPad been on deck?

While my boat has a 4" garmin chart plotter mounted by the companionway, it is hard to read details from a distance.

Some time ago I purchased software for my iPad as a back-up navigation system (yes there are also charts aboard). Before mounting my iPad at the helm, I was curious how long other people's iPads have lasted in an open cockpit of a sailboat. Or if it hasn't died how long it has been on deck. I keep mine in a Griffin Technologies case as at the time as it was the most durable one on the market. The Ram mount looks robust and will hold the Griffin case.

If you are using an iPad on deck, any info on life expectancy and mount will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

2.5 years. In the cockpit beneath a bimini. If it rains with wind, it goes into a ziploc bag. Not bad!

Re: How long has your iPad been on deck?

I used this ip57 standard waterproof case for my ipad last season. The ipad is my primary navigation tool using InavX. (2 backup ipads on board in case of) Works great and keeps the ipad dry and protects the corners and back like no other casing.
Only problem is charging with waterproof cases since one can't connect the cable.
Had the ipad also overheated a few times when it was in direct sunlight for a long time, the display tells you that the device is overheated and needs to cool down. I take it down and remove it from the case to cool it down when this happens. After about 10 minutes it can be used again.

I've had a Lifeproof case on mine for over a year. I love the case, but hate the company.

The company isn't so bad if you deal directly with their legal department! Far better than customer service!

LMAO thanks for the comments. I guess I am going forward with networking the Ray and NMEA instruments and putting the iPad on deck.

I really like my Griffin, never had a need for customer service or legal.

Cheers
