How to get NMEA 2K wind data onto Smartpilot X5

Hi

I've got a Raymarine SmartPilot X5 driving a tiller drive and I'd like to be able to sail to wind angle. My wind instruments are NMEA 2K.

The X5 has SeaTalk NG screw terminals. (With nothing currently connected)

From what I've read it seems that it might be a simple as connecting the NMEA 2K bus to the SeaTalk NG screw terminals on the X5... I'd assume that this would give the X5 the wind data that it would need to sail to wind.

Would this work?

Thanks in advance!

yes , seatalkng is NMEA 2000 with a different connector , so you need seatlkng backbone and a NMEA200 to seatalkng cable , ( or a vice versa backbone)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm guessing that since the X5 has screw terminals I can just butcher a regular NMEA 2K cable from the existing 2K bus and screw them in.

Will be interesting to see if it's as simple as that without any config changes on the X5. Should I see sentences coming from the tiller/X5 on the 2K network? (I have a Raspberry Pi with a pican-m hat so I can see all the sentences on the bus)

Cheers
J.

Yes just buy a nmea 2000 drop cable and tee. Cut the correct end off and wire to the pilot. It will get wind. And your n2k bus will get compass heading.
