How to wire gps antenna to Standard Horizon GX2150

I have purchased the attached gps antenna with the intention of hooking it up to my Standard Horizon GX 2150. But it came with zero instructions. Does anyone know which cables I’d need to connect to the SH. I know the blue wire on the SH is the input for data.

You would connect them to the NMEA0183 input on your radio. From the radio documentation, blue wire +, green wire - on the radio. So you would connect the green on the radio to the black on the gps, and the blue on the radio to the green on the gps. You will also have to provide power to the GPS somehow on the red and black wires. It's a receiver, not just an antenna.

Forgive me if you know this stuff already, have you set the radio baud rate to 4800 and using the radio blue and green wires ? Why do you need to connect it to the radio, can you not use the Plotter or Autopilot NMEA outputs ?

Yes, changed the baud rate and used the wires as indicated.

My radio has a DSC calling function which I’d like to be able to use. Can’t use it without gps.

Do you have a chart plotter and or an autopilot if so where do they get their GPS signal from?

We had a similar problem with a Raymarine VHF it needed an NMEA 4800 GPS source, we ended up using the autopilot output because the plotter single connection baud rate was set at 38400 for the AIS.

Re: How to wire gps antenna to Standard Horizon GX2150

So I wonder did the original poster just give up and throw his equipment overboard or did he figure it out? I can't find any diagram of the rear end of my gx2150 Standard Horizon AIS Plus radio to let me know what connections are for what, nor what cables are available, one pinout that doesn't match what I see or have, no mention of other variations of pinouts, . I have one connection that looks like a data connection and there was a very long wire connected to the radio and another cable that appears to have went to an old NMEA0183 plotter, the cable plugged into the back of the radio has a female data plug on the end and a white and black wire sticking out the side of it, pictures attached. Why is this crap so complicated? Every dealer and every product is lacking information on how to connect this stupid mess up to the right components its supposed to go with. Why is marine instruments configuration so damn cryptic?!

A little background on the junk I have aboard my (new to me) boat. Ev100 autopilot system for wheel steering from my old boat, I brought my electronics to the new boat (including the Axiom 7 chart plotter head that you have to buy every stinking button and piece for it to work, these people nickel and dime you to death!) Anyways, the new boat I'm in now has a standard Horizon GX 2150 AIS Plus onboard and it receives and sends standard VHF radio signals only at this point. So after doing a little reading I understand the radio outputs and receives Nmea0183 data stream and my sea talk NG system with the Axiom 7 chartplotter runs on Nema 2000 which has the seatalkNG proprietary connectors that you can't just plug and play so I bought an Actisense ngw-1 ISO Gateway (I assume it's whats needed, thanks internet, see photos). I don't want to cut this (apparent) data wire that's plugged into the radio because I'm certain that as soon as I do that I will find the right stinking connector used on eBay for a $5,000 penalty just for boating, or maybe it'll be laying in the trash can up at the front of my marina. Anyways, finding information on how to make these connections is stupid ridiculous, I have a major headache, blood pressure shot high in the sky and it's like nobody knows how to put this stuff together and the people who figure it out drop off the face of the Earth so the rest of us have to pull our hair out trying to figure out how to connect this money scheme together! All right, I have ranted enough here's the photos.

Re: How to wire gps antenna to Standard Horizon GX2150

I have a SH 2100 w AIS and DSC. Probably older than what you have. But looking at its installation manual it shows that it gets its GPS data input from the chart plotter. It doesn't have a direct connection to the GPS.

On my Raymarine system the chartplotters have their own GPS, but it is selected in the setup for the optional external GPS. I dont think thats required, but its they way it was when I bought the boat and it works, so thats the way it will stay for now.

Id put up a copy of the instal diagrams, but I dont have a convenient way to do that right now. But you can always download a GX2100 manual and take a peek. Probably uses the same setup.

Hope it helps some. I feel your pain.

I appreciate you, such a quick reply, I thought this thread was abandoned LOL so I got Brave and I cut the data wire coming from the radio and discovered seven wires, red, yellow, purple, green, blue, gray, brown.

On the actisense ngw-1 there are four wires and what appears to be a ground, red, black, white, blue and that ground wire.

I believe I have and understand the pinouts for the wires coming from the radio but the actisense manual does not really give Clarity on exactly what the wires are supposed to do from their device. I took a couple of screenshots from a couple of different sources, I know the Lawrence isn't what I'm trying to hook up but that image shows the basic pinout on the radio side.

I'm leery of chancing connecting wires not being sure what's supposed to do what. Please see attached screenshots. Thank you!

Re: How to wire gps antenna to Standard Horizon GX2150

I was hoping since these are among the most popular pieces of hardware and likely the majority of broke sailors ran into the same issue at some point, spending hundreds for guidance could be avoided. If I were working on an extremely technical issue with high dollar complicated equipment I could see justifying spending the money the service charges but at those rates I could just buy new equipment. Thank you though. 👍
