Hydraulic autopilot ram

I’m having a problem with my Raymarine hydraulic linear drive autopilot ram.

When the autopilot is in standby my helm is a good deal stiffer than it is with the ram disconnected from the quadrant. Autopilot works just fine in auto.

This has led me to believe that the bypass valve is not being fully opened by the solenoid when in standby.

I removed the solenoid and see that the holes in the plunger are not fully lined up with the ones in the cylinder.

Any body have an idea of how long the throw of the piston should be, and or how to fix?

Thanks
