A Blacksmith works with iron, a woodsmith works with wood, so, what does a dick smith do?

Re: I do love a bargain

I just bought two :-)

It appears that Trickie-Dickie's is closing down.

For those geniunely wondering, Dick Smith is the name of a chap who started a small electrical store many years ago in Sydney and it grew and grew. He sold the company some years back for many millions (Woolworths I think?). We was also the boss of the Australian equivalent of the FAA. He now sells organic and Australian foods and flies around in his Cessna Citation X private Jet. Nice fellow but somewhat controversial.

Re: I do love a bargain

Just checked at my local - no stock left in Brisbane but a couple in Rocky if you are up that way. Good catch CMD!

I doubt DS is closing, just closing out slow-moving stock lines. Actually the chain was doing OK long after the Electronic Dick himself departed. UNTIL the Woolies bunch decided to make it bigger and better. Well, so far they haven't fixed it (not sure it was broken...), they've f#^@%!& it. They would have expected headwinds trying to move into turf dominated by JB, Hardly Normal etc. Cant see them giving up soon, although with new store fitouts, bigger footprints they must be miles underwater and may not know which way is up. A good test of senior management, and I think they'll persist but perhaps with changed division leadership. They blew up a working business model (Jaycar I'm sure are offering a thousand thanks) and so far have not got the replacement up to snuff. I occasionally get stuff there, I'd like them to survive.

Re: I do love a bargain

At least 5 stores are closing in Melbourne alone.

The massive one at Chadstone has closed - it was there for around 2 years.

The economy and on-line purchases are not helping.

Re: I do love a bargain

I have an extra one on hold in a Melbourne store if anyone wants it.

You can either go and pick it up or your local *might* be able to get it sent to them.

There are only a few left in Melbourne.
