Icom 707-Barefoot-Antenna Radiating Mast?

Wondering about putting the 707 on the boat. Is it best to run barefoot with dedicated power seperate from other systems? Also wondering about antenna radiation with a vertical mounted to the mast, are you radiating the mast?

No different than any other HF transceiver running 100w. It's always preferable to have a dedicated circuit. Any nearby metal will distort and detune an antenna in close proximity and in the same plane. You are not "radiating the mast" but rather creating interations which will decrease and/or alter effective radiated power.

Err.. just how long is this intended vertical? I can't see how you could physically attach a normal HF vertical whip to the side of a mast (or to the top of the mast -windage and weight would be excessive).

Perhaps you have an idea of a different "vertical"!

S/V, yes, didn't really mean the mast would light up, LOL, but deflection for sure.

Wotname, you got a point, not sure how it would be mounted, if memory serves (which is often does not) a Ranger verticle, not too heavy but ya know, on a smaller boat that may not work.

Problem solved, a radar arch where the rest of the stuff is mounted, an antenna farm will give extra hanging space too!

Don't know why my spark gap didn't think of that!.....73's

Not enough high tension

Plus radar arch gives solar panel mounting options and so on.

Re: Icom 707-Barefoot-Antenna Radiating Mast?

The IC-707 is an HF rig, not VHF. Vertical antennas for HF should be mounted low....as close to the water as you can practically fit them....for a low vertical angle takeoff.

This is the opposite of VHF antennas, which should be mounted as high as possible for maximum range (line-of-sight).
