ICOM IC-M802 Microphone Plug

Howdy all,

I have an IC-M802 I bought new in 2003. Since I used it in a fixed base, I have always wanted to connect a desk microphone to make operation more convenient and to eliminate that annoying mechanical "click" that is transmitted every time the button is released.

The microswitch inside the microphone case makes a mechanical click prior to PTT disconnect every time it's released. Looking at the RF output using a peak reading watt meter, the power output of the click is upwards of 100W making it quite audible. (and irritating for some!)

I was able to eliminate it by disassembling the mic and operating the micro switch away from the mic element. (Although that is a tad impractical!)

1 choice is to simply buy a cord and molded plug directly from ICOM. It's somewhere around $45 + tax and shipping if applicable. (almost what a new mic would cost if you shop around!!)

The other choice is to actually find the correct plug (probably already molded to a cable)

The plug appears to be this Amphenol ALTW type plug

Either way, has anyone here used either an ICOM plug and cord or the above plug to connect a different desk type or other microphone to an IC-M802?

ICOM support was no help on this at all. Their only answer is that the hand microphone is the only one available. They couldn't tell me if any of their desk microphones would work at all.

The service manual is not much help either. It doesn't identify what type of mic cartridge it is, only indicating the actual impedance.

The microphone unit is MC1: KUC2123-030245 and is likely a condenser type mic.

Anyone here ever tried any ICOM or other desk type mic on an IC-M802?

Thanks,

Rick
