Re: ICOM M802 GPS Connector???

Carina PDX
I need GPS basically for navigation from Florida to Grenada. I'm ina small hurry as I WAS departing Oct 15 but Dorain changed al that as the local bridges as impassable ( 63' mast). So as soon as the water level drops I'd like to leave but who knows when that will be.
That said If you can direct me to the correct device and a vendor I'll go from there. A puck type will be easiest to install, price not a big concern.
Just to be clear my current GPS has a u-blox engine per package ( but as you know it wnt work it seems):

BLOX 8 ENGINE: Uses u-Blox protocol specification to configure device over serial interface. Combines low power consumption and high sensitivity. Exceptional jamming immunity. 56 channels for fast acquisition and reacquisition.
MULTI BAND RECEIVER: Receives GPS, GLONASS, QZSS and SBAS. Factory set for GPS and can be changed to GLONSASS using software. Support NMEA0183, 2.3 (compatible to 3.0). Built-in WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS
COMPATIBLE: Windows 10, Win 8, Win 7, Win Vista, Win XP 32bit or 64bit. For Linux, please check uBlox application notes on compatibility. Free GNSS software available.
WATERPROOF: No need to cancel your road trip if it is raining since this heavy duty waterproof navigator can be used rain or shine. IPX6 Water Resistant. Cable Length 6.5 feet (2 Meters)
SOFTWARE: Easily connects to your laptop via USB 2.0 and works with most commercial or open source mapping software including Google Earth, Windows Maps and Open CPN.

Re: ICOM M802 GPS Connector???

Sorry, what are you asking? Why all that marketing nonsense?

It sounds like you have something that works with the laptop. You should be fine.

That’s a very confusing post.

I have two MR-350P (SiRFstar III version), one of them attached to the M802, my DSC VHF radio, and PACTOR modem. They work well, and I expect the IV version to be the same. The second one I had attached to my Furuno MFD; I bought a uBlox 8 receiver to replace it but the output seems incompatible (I think too low voltage) so I'm hanging onto the MR-350P until I get it working. I switched in order to get some more experience with the uBlox 8 (which I also have in a USB puck); other than startup time there is little difference in output. Even the dual-band uBlox 9 (seeded to developers at this point) doesn't offer significant improvement to accuracy of position, although it looks like instantaneous speed and heading may be improved a bit. The real advances in GPS accuracy are coming with master/slave systems, where local reference receivers provide local corrections; they may show up in marinas in the future but the real application is autonomous vehicle navigation.

Doesn’t work with what? With the icom? Yes, we know that, and it won’t.

But does it work with the pc? If so, what is the problem?

How much are they asking? Someone on Amazon is asking $125 - absurd. Originally they listed at $65.

I could ship you my old MR-350P with 5V power supply, for $30 including USPS Priority mail.

I can find many inexpensive GPS receivers, but they are all shipping from China. The US ones are too expensive, but I appreciate your need for speed.

Prices are all over the place, if you google around you sometimes get lucky. I bought mine for AU$7, from expansys. Postage was a further AU$20, which kinda sucked, but overall I was happy with the price.

They still show stock at that price on the Australian site.

OK, that makes sense now.

I am probably telling you something you already know... but... you do know the radio itself works fine without the GPS unit? All you lose it is the "Big Red Button" mode.

Re: ICOM M802 GPS Connector???

Just wondering -

I’ve always been told that BNC stood for British Naval Connection. Any truth or other info?

(Another “dad fact” that seems a bit shaky in the light of day.)
