Re: Icom M802 voice compression mod

Is there a place online to download the software, to access the B menu?

I'd also like to purchase the cable, for the upload.

Cheers
Paul.

Try The Antenna Farm for the cable and software.

Howdy Paul,

And howdy everyone else! First post here!

I bought my IC-M802 + AT-140 in 2003 and still have it. Aside from the disintegrating mic cord and "clipping" problem, and one other problem all fixed by ICOM, It's been and still is an outstanding piece of equipment!

I have used it in a fixed base setting for almost 18 years exclusively on the US Amateur bands mostly 160-20m using an SGC-235, MFJ-998 and now a Palstar auto tuner. With the MFJ and Palstar tuner I use it driving a 1000W amplifier.

I purchased the CS-M802 (programming software) from an eBay seller in Taiwan about 10-12 years ago and noticed just now they still have (1) for sale @ about $18 + $8 shipping .

I also bought from ebay an OPC-478 equivalent cable for about $15.

It allows one to program user channels and I also turned the "comp" on. The main difference with it on is the average power output is increased (measured with a Bird 43 + 250w slug) . peak power didn't change much.

The actual mod to enable the other menu requires one to be able to do a little circuit board modification on surface mount devices. It can of course be done if you know what you're doing but it's best left to people with the right tools.

If you have CS-M802, you just turn the via the drop-down menu and upload.

The last time I spoke to ICOM(APR 21) , they told me that they will still fully support the radio. If you have a display failure, that will be problematic since they said the display is no longer available.

I don't have a lot of complaints about the radio and you can read my review on Eham for more info.

Regards,

Rick

Hi Rick,

do you have more information on the "little modification"?

My radio technician couldn't find any hints on what to do in the service manual.
He's going to do the clipping mod and while he's at it he could enable "menu b" on the hardware side.

Cheers and kind regards

Hi Will,

I saw it on Dockside Radio several years ago. The only addition to the menu was the enabling the "Compressor". Since I was able to do it with the programming software, I didn't think it worth the trouble since I leave the compressor on all the time. I didn't copy the procedure but it didn't look all that hard.

I have no surface mount soldering tools and didn't really want to get them just for this.

The compressor makes a pretty big difference in average power output, and a noticeable increase in "talk-power" no change in peak power though.

One problem though. If you have it on and you're in a rather noisy cockpit or other place etc, it will be picked up by the microphone.

I just did a little search and it appears that no one talks about the mod anymore. Maybe ICOM wanted it gone for liability reasons.

There used to be marine electronics shops that would do it for about $100. I didn't see any in the search.

I have been tempted to sell this one and get the newer IC-M803. Seems like it would be pretty nice. These M802's seem to still be in demand.

Sorry I cannot help.

Hope you had a great Christmas, & Happy new year!

Rick
