IDVBT-DAB in AIS. What for?

Hi, Im looking into buying AIS transmiter, I need it to have WiFi so i can see it on my Navionics app, SOTDMA support (class B+) and bassicaly thats it. now Im looking at three models:

DIGITAL YACHT AIT5000
TRX3-IS-IGPS-N2K-WIFI
TRX3-IS-IGPS-N2K-WIFI-IDVBT-DAB

And my question is, what DVBT module and DAB receiver are needed for in AIS?

PS. Do which of those you recommend?

Re: IDVBT-DAB in AIS. What for?

Forget about the DAB and TV if you don’t use them frequently. Who listens to radio these days? I guess that’s a feature for old farts sitting in a marina in the baltic sea.

I have the EasyTRX2 with WIFI and to be honest, works but it’s annoying to manage. If I had to redo it, I would go withe the plain one and a dedicated NMEA to Wifi gateway. Why?

First, you can bet your butt that the Wifi implementation isn’t keeping up with time and it’s a rather simplistic implementation. On the older models, not all authentication protocols are implemented, the thing can’t function properly as an uplink etc. All the Wifi is good for is to connect to an existing board-wifi and it’s fiddly at achieving this.

Also the company is very unwilling to update their software to manage older models. Get a dedicated NMEA to Wifi gateway for 170€ and you’ll have a lot easier time when your electronic-installation evolves.

That’s only about the EASYAis products. I have a better opinion on the Digital Yacht products, but no experience with their AIS.

Depending on your boat, having an integrated AIS display might turn out being a waste of money if you use a different chart plotter solutions. I’m using the Standard Horizon GX2000, which can display AIS targets but has no AIS-receiver, as my VHF and secondary AIS display and my iPad as chart plotter. A displayless AIS is fine for this setup.

If I had to redo my setup today, I think I would go with them too.
