Insie bacup Chartplotter/computer??

Need advice !!! Thinking of getting a larger screen /backup chartplotter capable machine for my 34gem cat. I have heard a Apple iPad 10.1 " will do the job and refurb ones are available for $200. I have a 7" garmin Plotter at the helm. I have never used Apple stuff -always PC. On a previous boat I had a refurb HP17" laptop which I loaded with a Sea ClearII CD with all the maps and used a hockey puck antenna .Then got a Verizon Hotspot and had it all . So how does this compete with the Apple iPad?? Will the I Pad work well with a hot spot? Used 17" Laptops are also available for $200. Thanks.
