Is a Sat phone really necessary for weather?

My husband and I used a Sat phone while cruising. The biggest problem we found is if there is cloud cover, rain (we had to be outside the boat to use it) or any other thing that might hinder the phone from finding a connection in outer space it didn't work.
I concur with the rest of the group in using a SSB radio. Our 10 year old son could operate it with no problem.
After going through one hellish storm our mantra was "We don't move without Herb's approval".

This is not a prompt ,just may help you make up your mind.
I have both,,the ssb AND Sat.phone,,because i run offshore and can not always
receive ssb,i use the Sat.phone,its reliable and i can also use it for email .I was just
given a newer model and have my older Global for sale,,still in good working order.
