Moitessier Hat

Is anyone using one of these Moitessier Hat's onboard with your Raspberry Pi?

It looks like it is an AIS receiver and can be good with an autopilot. (maybe especially the Pipilot) Plus it has Barometric Pressure, GNSS Receiver, etc

Are there other uses for it as well?

Re: MOITESSIER HAT

I tried to buy the Moitessier hat 2 but it is sold out at sailoog. I have heard great things. Anyone know a source to buy them?

Re: MOITESSIER HAT

I am using one. The AIS reception works very well and integrates good with opencpn. I use a short Shakespeare AIS tuned antenna connected to it. As written below it also has a GPS chip, compass and a gyro sensor.

I use the GPS for position info into the Nav system and the output data, GPS, compass, gyro are also the backup for the autopilot.

Re: Moitessier Hat

I have a Moitessier hat, the first version, it worked very good on Pi3
Used it about 2 year, but replaced it with Raymarine N2K network, axiom mfd and a Yacht Devices ethernet gateway to OpenCPN.

It is eating dust here, so if it can have a second life on a ship, i can send it for shipping costs.

I'd love it if still available! I bought an RPi 4 to go with the new version, but then missed the "in stock" email for 2 days and it was out of stock again for the season. Planning to use it as a backup chart plotter and possible navigation aid for single-handing an Alberg 30 if I can get PyPilot working reliably. Oh, and for a backup anchor alarm that could text me on shore. I have a couple RPi 3s still which should work. PMd my address

Re: Moitessier Hat

Works well

Has a solid state gyro, baro, good GPS, AIS rx

Only draw back is there is zero support for it, so if you have a issue it’s a “go google it” situation

Re: Moitessier Hat

Yes it works very well.
AIS reception is very good, i used it with a Shakespeare AIS 1 meter antenne.
Only problem i had is after Openplotter update, the image of the Montessier hat also had to be updated, and this was not always ready at same version.
Also use a good power converter, i used a 5 amps meanwell 12 to 5 volt

Pic of my old setup here in OpenCPN forum
