I’ve got a nasa wired wind instrument and it seems fine
Been on the boat for about 4 years and no problem so far

Not to hijack the thread, but I was thinking about trying their ultrasonic speed log - SO tired of gunked paddle wheels.
Any experience there?

Matt

What are you sending the signal to? What chart plotter?

In my case it’s nmea2000

The lcj unit is NMEA 0183. The normal installation is the supplied NMEA 0183 down the mast then for most installations a NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 converter below decks to interface with the other instruments. They sell a suitable converter (the windy plug).

I just bought one. What's in the box and instructions look fine. Can't install it until next haul out as it doesn't fit my existing retractable through hull.

Re: NASA marine nmea wind sensor

I replaced my 9 year old NASA wind system with their new wireless system in 2020. This summer it quit sending the wind speed. NASA responded to my email quickly and offered to send at no charge a repair part to me in Canada to fix it. The part came with clear instructions and fixed the problem. I also have NASA speed and depth units that are now 12 seasons old and still functioning great. As a note the NASA wind signal NEMA0183 is fed into my Garmin GPS and bridged to NEMA 2000 and controls my autohelm without issues. I choose NASA because you can purchase parts like paddle wheels and wind cups for a very reasonable fee.

Lowrance and an old wp30 pilot

To be sure the lowrance doesn’t like the 183 much but the pilot seems ok

So nothing like something others might use but the device itself and its display are holding up well so far

I am trying to get mine to work with RPI and a E120W MFD. The display works fine but I can't get any signal to anything else. Are you just hooking the 0183 wires direct to your Lawrence?

The plotter has 183 input and also 2000

I forgot to mention that my current issue with display on the plotter is I don’t think it understands the wind instrument sentences

Re: NASA marine nmea wind sensor

NASA marine has a fairly good reputation as low-cost marine devices. Back to 2002, my first boat installed NASA AIS engine, worked well.

Re: NASA marine nmea wind sensor

Way late to the party. My boat has had the Nasa/Clipper wireless unit for eight years. The receiver is wired to my Ray T122. Frankly, it's the only wireless thing on my boat that has not been an issue at one time or the other. I replaced the wind vane and cups a couple years ago and it's still going strong. My experience is it is a fraction of the cost of the Raymarine unit and considerably more reliable. Mounted on a 40' mast. Should it crap out tomorrow, I'd replace it without a doubt.

I was happy to learn they produce a 0183 to 2000 converter now. As I've gone with a STNG network, this is good news. I'm going to get it and remove the old T122, which is overdue for replacement.
